So I've been two months silent. I'm going to hate myself for this 10 years from now, but let's go with what we got. The highlights:
APRIL
The remainder of April was mostly uneventful according to my Google calendar and my Facebook posts.
April 24th -- Evan had his Kindergarten orientation and assessment (GAH!). He is very ready, according to the teachers and interventionist. Despite not being 5 by September 1st, we are able to enroll him under the lesser known exception to the rule. And honestly, I think he'll be better off in Kindergarten, than doing a 3rd year of preschool:
MAY
Sean was 2nd grade Student of the Month for May!! SO proud of him! He's done amazing things at this school and I couldn't be happier about our choice to send him there!
The school puts on a Student-of-the-Month breakfast every May for all students who were SOM throughout the year. |
May 1 -- The boys and I did the Mason State Bank runs. I'm still not a fan of evening runs/races, but I got it done and it was much easier not pushing Evan in the stroller like I did last year! Sean did the kids mile (he walked 99% of it) and Evan did the 100 yard Bulldog Dash.
May 2 -- I was supposed to do an 8-mile training run, but after 2-1/2 miles, my left knee started hurting so bad, I wanted to cry. I only did 5 miles (2-1/2 running, and 2-1/2 walking back to where I started).
May 9 -- I was supposed to do a 9-mile training run, but left knee gave me even worse fits than the week prior. I was freaking out I tore something or had a debilitating injury. No more running until after I see the orthopedic doctor (I had a regular appointment scheduled for the 13th). In the meantime, I keep swimming and biking as I'm training for the Hawk Island triathlon.
May 13 -- Dr. appointment reveals runners knee. I now have it in BOTH knees, and he really wants me to do formal physical therapy (I've since started that). But the good news is that I'm not injured and I can continue running as much as I can tolerate. I'm not going to do any damage -- just pain. But at this point, I realize I can't do the Bayshore Half Marathon I'm signed up for -- so I plan for the 10K instead.
May 15 -- Hightale to Ale 5K in Detroit. The first of three races in a series I'm doing with a large group of friends. I rocked the first two miles, but around mile 2, my left knee started hurting. But knowing I wasn't going to do damage, I powered through and actually made pretty decent time!
May 17 -- Grandma's 90th birthday party! Cookies, cake, strawberries, coffee, punch, family, and friends! It was a great day!
May 19 -- Liz and I took the boy hiking at a local county park where there are ledges. I almost had heart failure. But thankfully there were no falls, no injuries.... just two little boys who are clearly not afraid of heights.
May 23 -- BAYSHORE! I was supposed to run the half marathon and I was visibly irritated that I couldn't make that happen. But I did the 10K in record-for-me time and enjoyed some chocolate-peanut butter Moomers ice cream by 9:00am. It was a gorgeous run and once I got past the first mile, the running high kicked in and I felt NO pain until it was over (at which point my left knee again decided to be a little angry with me).
May 25 -- Memorial Day and Grandma's birthday! Grandpa was Grand Marshall in a parade, so the boys and I went to see him, then we went to breakfast with G&G while Mom was over in Scotland and Ireland on a cruise, NOT buying bagpipes for my children, by the way.
May 30 -- Michigan Mile. Both my boys rocked the mile! Evan actually had more stamina and speed than Sean. I stayed with him, almost struggling to keep up with him, and he finished several seconds ahead of Sean. So proud of those boys!
May 31 -- "Do or do not, there is no tri..." Well, there was a tri. But we did not. The weather on Sunday, May 31st -- the day that was supposed to be my first triathlon -- was awful. So cold. So, so cold. And windy. And rainy. The temperature was "feels like 38" with the wind. I knew if I attempted that triathlon, my lungs would hate me for a good long time. And the likelihood of ending up in Urgent Care or ER for a breathing treatment was high. We (Kerry, Liz, and I) showed up at the check-in with our bikes. Then we checked right out and went to a local diner for hot chocolate. It's not my first DNS (did-not-start).... but it's the one I'm most bummed about. Oh well. Better days.
