Evan had his 18-month well-child exam Thursday. He's 29 pounds and a little over 32 inches. Apparently his weight is creeping up in terms of percentile (went from 75th to 90th since last appointment) and the doctor mentioned "we should watch that." No snacking between meals other than scheduled snacks (which we don't, believe it or not), limit the juice and other empty calories (which we do, believe it or not), and make sure meals are healthy & balanced (which is probably something I could improve on a little, I admit).
But he's not concerned yet. Just wanted to make us aware (as if we could not be aware of his belly!). I kept thinking that as Evan's mobility increased, his weight gain would slow down, but it doesn't appear to be happening, and now I have the proof. I'm really not sure what else to do. I can't not feed him when he's hungry.... who does that to an 18-month old?
And let's face it: the kid has been a food-a-holic since birth, when he was eating every 1.5 to 3 hours around the clock. I doubt highly I'll be able to change that about him, even when he's at his most picky.
(Does anyone find it mildly amusing that I'm talking about Evan's weight on the same post where I am showing off a picture of him in a Burger King crown?! Haha!)
They ordered the standard lead test and anemia test. Yay for bloodwork....
And the doctor said to try cutting out acidic foods such as mandarin oranges, strawberries, pineapple, and tomatoes from Evan's diet. He advised that those are most likely the culprits behind his constant diaper rashes. At this point, I'll try anything. That poor kid is just prone to diaper rashes.
Otherwise, he's a picture of health. We made it through winter with no ear infections, which means he has most likely dodged tubes (yay!!!). I credit our unseaonsably mild winter for that one, but I'll take it.
And his language has exploded over the past week or two -- even more so than what I wrote about in his 18-month stats -- which the doctor says is very, very likely the reason behind our recent bedtime fiascos and his refusal to go down as smoothly as normal. His head is working overtime on these new language skills. It has gone beyond repeating, and he actually knows the words that go to objects. He knows hat ("hot" or "haut"), coat, foot, food, juice, head, beads, apple... I'm trying to think of all the words he knows now because I know there are more. Dan & I were just staring at each other yesterday with our mouths gaping open at the things Evan was saying.
Funny story: I was upstairs Thursday afternoon finishing something up and Dan was getting ready to go back to work after he'd popped home to grab something. He yells up the stairs, "Honey, are you coming down?" Two seconds later, I hear a sweet 18-month old voice yelling, clear as day, "Honey! Honey!"
Not-so-funny story: Evan took a tumble down the stairs Saturday. Top to bottom. Sean witnessed the whole thing and I'm pretty sure he's scarred for life. He (Sean) s~c~r~e~a~m~e~d when he saw Evan fall. Blood-curdling scream! When I got to Evan, he cried for maybe 15 seconds, Sean cried for probably 15 minutes! Seriously, the poor kid could not pull it together. Evan was off playing as if nothing ever happened while I tried my darndest to calm Sean. He finally stopped crying but it was all he could talk about. Then last night at 2:30am (so technically this morning), we hear Sean screaming/crying in his room and we were certain it was a nightmare. Dan went to take care of him, and when I asked what it was, Dan responds: "Bad dream.... About Evan falling down the stairs."
I officially feel worse for Sean than I did/do for Evan on that fall....
